Israeli citizens mark two-year remembrance of October 7th attacks as Palestinian ceasefire talks proceed
People have gathered around the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-led offensive on October 7th, 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The assault led to more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our violent adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.
He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the return of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled official memorials until 16 October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still took place across the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the relatives of people killed in the Hamas attack was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was aired on Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was held around the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of mediated discussions to review the conditions of the proposal.
A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations indicated that an evening round of indirect talks commenced at evening in Egypt.
The source stated the morning session ended without concrete outcomes, because of conflicting views over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not restart combat after the opening period of the arrangement.
He noted that the talks are "challenging and have yet to achieve any significant progress," but pointed out that intermediaries are working hard to close the gaps between the both parties.
Essential Points in Discussions
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The swap of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for relief supplies deliveries
- After-conflict management of the area
Civilian Feeling
In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother lived through the assault on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were lost their lives and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - shared: "No location feels like home anymore and until every captive return none of us will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everybody home returned, we can relax anew. Then we can commence heal," she added.
In front of the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to express their support for the families of the abducted. Israel reports forty-eight remain in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be living.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "We need do whatever arrangement necessary for the hostages to come back home. But we really want guarantees that we will be protected."
Research now consistently show that approximately the majority of the population want the conflict to end in return for the release of the hostages.
Gaza Situation
At the location of Nova festival, mourners came together to pay their respects.
From there, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers reported the heavy Israeli attacks continued.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were documented in the dawn of that day in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and zone districts and in the east side district of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"As the dusk comes, the dread appears with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack previously, shared.
"We are fearful of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are resting together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who puts his head on me the entire evening."
"Every second we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."
Medical Emergency
The medical facility in Gaza City announced it had taken in the remains of half dozen people by the afternoon, including three killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of that area said two more dead people had been delivered. One of them was killed by Israeli soldiers while seeking help to the southern area, health workers stated.
