Oscar-Nominated Star Diane Ladd, Known For Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Passes Away at the Age of 89.

The Oscar-nominated actress Diane Ladd, a Hollywood veteran left us aged 89.

The star, whose filmography included Chinatown, passed away at home in Ojai, California. This announcement was shared in a statement shared by her offspring, Oscar-winning actor her daughter Laura Dern.

Dern, who starred with Diane Ladd in various films such as Wild at Heart, referred to her as “my incredible hero and my precious gift being my mom”, writing that she was by her side during her final moments.

“She was the most wonderful grandmother, mother, daughter, actress, artist along with empathetic spirit that seemed almost dreamlike,” she stated. “We were fortunate to know her. She is now with the angels.”

Initial Roles and Rise to Fame

The start of her career featured supporting roles in TV shows like Gunsmoke and the seventies featured her performing with the legendary Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.

During that year, the year 1974, she performed alongside Ellen Burstyn in Martin Scorsese’s acclaimed comedy drama Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her role brought Ladd her first Oscar nomination in the supporting actress category.

Later Decades

In the 1980s, she appeared in the thriller Black Widow, a suspense story and funny follow-up Christmas Vacation while also joining the sitcom Alice, a comedy program inspired by Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

During the next ten years, she was given a further supporting actress Academy Award nomination for her part in Lynch’s the movie Wild at Heart where she played the mom of her real-life daughter the character played by Dern. The following year she obtained another nomination for her performance in the film Rambling Rose which included her daughter.

“This was the film that the late Princess Diana selected as her very favorite, and she invited Laura and I to London for a special screening and an event dedicated to us,” Ladd recalled of Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, grasping our hands, with tears, viewing our performance.”

The nineties also saw roles in the comedy The Cemetery Club joining her again with Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political story, a comedy about politics, featuring John Travolta and Alexander Payne’s Citizen Ruth where she acted as Dern’s mother again. The decade also saw her score TV award nominations for roles in Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, the show Grace Under Fire plus Touched by an Angel.

Partnerships with Her Daughter

She kept appearing alongside her daughter in comedy drama Daddy and Them, a movie, Lynch’s the movie Inland Empire and the series by Mike White satirical show the program Enlightened. She was also seen with Sandra Bullock, a star in 28 Days, Anthony Hopkins, a legend in that movie and with Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, a biographical drama.

Her more recent television parts included Ray Donovan, a drama plus Young Sheldon.

Writing and Directing

She additionally penned and oversaw the humorous movie the movie Mrs Munck featuring her and previous spouse Bruce Dern. “Bruce is a talented star,” she said. “It was a privilege to guide him in a film. She happened to be a relative of the great Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a major inspiration in my life”.

In 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with a respiratory illness and advised her life expectancy was six months but made a full recovery when her daughter moved her to another medical facility.

“If you can take your pain and not let it back up like a sore or something, instead apply it to discover, to make the path clearer for you and those around, then you are triumphing,” Ladd expressed.
