The decision by the Democratic National Committee to block the publication regarding its own autopsy report concerning the 2024 election is remarkable but not surprising. Averse to unpleasant candor, the party's leadership apparatus behaves closer to a publicity machine than a political organization focused on building a volunteer base for winning elections.
An Environment of Conformity
Unwilling to challenge the party establishment's culture demanding unity, the DNC has stayed under the Biden-Harris shadow throughout 2025. Releasing an official autopsy would have indicated whether the leadership actually want to foster public discourse about the missteps that paved the way for the former president to win re-election. Yet, the committee is acting as if there are no lessons to understand following the stunning loss from the last cycle.
"Here’s our North Star: does this help us win? If the answer is no, it’s a distraction from our fundamental goal," a justification which was presented for withholding the document.
Critical Problems a Report Would Have Addressed
Any valuable post-mortem with any value would confront certain uncomfortable matters. Among them are:
- Voter Disengagement: Losing among a significant portion of the electorate that backed the Democratic ticket during the previous election became a critical factor in the close 2024 election.
- A Choice to Run: The stubborn insistence by the incumbent to stay in the race, alongside a last-minute withdrawal, is seen by some as denying Democratic voters of open primaries.
- Failing the Working-Class Base: While facing economic anxiety, the campaign allegedly bowing to elite contributors and not managing to challenge the effects of big business.
- A Gaza Impact: The refusal to adjust an approach concerning the situation in Gaza reportedly led to losing many voters, notably with youth voters, Arab-Americans, and Muslim Americans.
- Eroding Young Voter Allegiance: Polling data demonstrates a significant decline in votes for the candidate among young voters.
A Pattern Shunning Scrutiny
This refusal aligns with a recurring tendency of sidestepping uncomfortable facts. It recalls a situation where virtually every elected Democrat in Washington acquiesced to a sitting president's determination to seeking another term until a poor televised debate compelled a reversal.
At the same time, overwhelming numbers of the electorate were consistently telling surveyors of their opposition to that candidate to seek re-election.
Campaign Spending Concerns
A substantive autopsy would also investigate issues about where money went, including what sums flowed to party strategists as well as advertising contractors during an electoral effort which expended an enormous sum during the general election.
The Underlying Implication
Fundamentally, the suppression of the official autopsy is symptomatic of a submission to the established hierarchy who engineered an unsuccessful national race. The signal to the party's base – which includes countless loyal volunteers – appears to be that they do not be trusted to understand what the insiders have learned based on hundreds of interviews drawing from feedback from all states.
A political entity unwilling to critically review its own failings finds it difficult to break free from the cycle that ended up being so beneficial to their opponents.
